Europe’s largest grocery retail chain Carrefour says its sales in the first quarter of 2010 in Romania rose by 3.6 pct, despite a challenging environment, thanks to selling space expansion. The company posted a EUR 269 mln turnover for the reported period, compared to the EUR 250 mln rate in 2009.
In Bulgaria, Carrefour registered a EUR 5.0 mln turnover in the first quarter of 2010, from its single store in Bourgas. Carrefour launched its first Bulgarian hypermarket at the end of March 2009 which was a 13,000 sq. m unit with 8,300 sq. m usable space in Bourgas Plaza mall. The facility generated a EUR 19 mln turnover in 2009 with EUR 6.0 mln in the fourth quarter of last year.
