According to the National Statistics Institute in 2009 the housing fund in Bulgaria consisted of 2 136 thousand residential buildings and increased by 0.1% in comparison with 2008.
Total in the country were registered 3 789 thousand dwellings, 63.8 % of them were located in the towns and 36.2% in the villages.
By the end of the year 2009 steel-concrete buildings in the country were 105 thousands with 1 239 thousands dwellings, brick ones - 1578 thousands with 2096 thousand dwellings and 453.3 thousands dwellings were situated in 452.8 thousands buildings with other structure.
The 49.2% of dwellings in the towns were situated in steel-concrete buildings, 47.1% - in brick ones and 3.7% in others. At the same time 69.8% of the dwellings in the villages were in brick buildings, 26.6% - in others and 3.6% - in steel-concrete buildings only.
More of the dwellings in the country were with two and three rooms - 65.4 % of all dwellings, followed by dwellings with four or more rooms - 22.9% and one-room dwellings - 11.7%. In 2009 the greatest share of dwellings in the villages was with two and three rooms - 58.4% and in the towns - 69.3%. The average number of rooms in a dwelling in the villages was 3.1 and 2.6 in the towns.
The indicator of provision of dwellings per 1000 citizens in villages increased by 1.4% and by 1.3% in the towns as compared to the previous years.
In 2009 the most of the dwellings per 1 000 persons of population were recorded in Pernik - 725, Sofia -712, Vidin - 654, Lovech - 641 and 625 - Gabrovo districts.
The highest average number of the persons to a dwelling in 2009 was reported in the towns in districts Blagoevgrad - 2.6, Plovdiv - 2.5, Pazardzhik - 2.4, Sofia (capital) - 2.4 and in the villages in districts Blagoevgrad and Razgrad - respectively 2.3 and 2.2, while the lowest - in the villages of the district Pernik (0.7).
In 2009 the total floor space of dwellings was 242 291 thousand square meters and increased by 0.7% in comparison with 2008, the increase in the towns was 1.2%, while in the villages decreased - by 0.3%.
The most useful floor space per capita was registered in district Vidin - 43.4 sq. m, followed by Pernik - 3.3 sq.m, Sofia - 41.7 sq. m, Lovech - 40.6 sq. m, Montana - 38.8 sq. meters.
