Praktiker’s net sales in Romania fell 12.4 pct in the first half of 2010, compared to the same period last year, to EUR 96.5 mln, due to the exchange rate and the difficult economic situation.

Praktiker estimates that, under comparable conditions, the sales decline was 13.9 pct in euro terms, while its like-for-like sales in absolute terms fell 15.2 pct.

"In addition, the economic recovery in Eastern Europe is advancing only slowly. Even if the Ukraine seems to be recovering faster, the economic situation in Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary remains difficult," said the German DIY retailer, running 26 stores in Romania.

"However, Bulgaria and Romania also posted far better sales development in the second quarter than in the first three months," the report added. The company also said it will open a store in Romania in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Parktiker, also active in Bulgaria (nine stores), posted a sales decline of 27.9 pct in euro terms in the first half of 2010.

The company, running four stores in Ukraine and one in Albania, registered net sales of EUR 11.2 mln and EUR 2.3 mln in these countries respectively.
